McCarthy Pleased With "Promising" Webster - Ipswich Town News
Blues boss Mick McCarthy says he’s really pleased with summer signing Adam Webster, who was widely viewed as Town’s man of the match in Tuesday’s 1-0 win at Derby.
The 21-year-old, signed from Portsmouth over the summer, started the season in the team before dropping out for the Preston game when Tommy Smith came back into the right-sided central defence role.
But a back injury to Smith allowed Webster to return at the iPro Stadium and McCarthy says the one-time England U18 and U19 international is someone he sees as having a big future.
"He was bought for that reason, he is very promising,” he said. "I left him out against Preston because I thought Tommy Smith was a better defender, and at the present he probably is. But as a footballer, he’s better than all of them.
"As [we saw at Derby], you’ve got to be able to defend sometimes in this league, we sometimes forget that, but some of his runs forward were excellent.
"I’m really pleased with him. Overall, I’m very, very pleased with him.”
