Blues boss Mick McCarthy believes more of the Premier League’s wealth should be distributed to EFL clubs in order to level the playing field.
Town face Aston Villa at Portman Road this afternoon, one of a number of clubs in the division with the benefit of substantial parachute payments having been relegated from the Premier League last season.
Villa are understood to be set to receive £87 million over three years if they remain out of the top flight for that period, £40 million this season, £33 million in 2017/18 and £14 million the following year.
Asked whether parachute payments should be scrapped, McCarthy said: "I think more money should be put into the clubs that are in the Football League.
"People might ask why that is, well it might make it a fairer platform. It might make it a more level playing field.
"I don’t know, but I think it’s weighted far too much towards the top. If you consider the £1.1 billion [spent by Premier League clubs in the summer transfer window], there’s a £100 million that’s gone out in agents’ fees and to other people who have got nothing to do with football. That’s a helluva chunk of dosh.
"What could we do with that? And League One and League Two. I think more money should be put into it.”
However, McCarthy sees taking on the clubs with parachute payments or those whose owners are splashing out very large sums of cash as a challenge.
He added: "I’m not worried about it whatever they get, I quite enjoy punching against the big boys that have got all the money because it pleases me all the more when we beat them, like we did on Tuesday.”
