McCarthy Shocked and Surprised By Football Corruption Revelations - Ipswich Town News

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he’s shocked and surprised by the revelations which have emerged regarding a number of football managers in recent days, adding that he has nothing to fear from the ongoing media exposés.

"I’m shocked they’re coming out because I don’t know anything about them. And I am saddened by them,” McCarthy said.

Regarding his friend Sam Allardyce, who left his job as England manager after just one game and 67 days following a sting by the Daily Telegraph earlier this week, he added: "Very sad, but that’s all I’m going to comment on it. It’s always sad when somebody loses their job.”

Does he believe football has a big problem with the type of allegations currently being levelled at a number of managers? "Not from my perspective, no. Not from where I’m sitting in terms of me personally. I’ve never seen it, I’ve never been offered it, I’ve never come across it.

"But it has because of what’s happened this week and the allegations and revelations that are coming out.

"And what’s really annoying me is that lots of people will be looking inside the game and pointing the finger at all of us. And I don’t like that.”

He says it’s sad that other bosses might be tainted by association: "Of course it is. I’m hoping that’s not the case.

"But I’m not in the least bit worried about it all going off because it won’t be landing on my doorstep, I can assure you.”

Former England skipper Alan Shearer labelled England the "laughing stock of world football” following Allardyce’s departure, but former Ireland boss McCarthy wasn’t keen to get involved in the debate.

"That’s all for them to say, they’ve all got their opinions,” he added. "But you know what they say, opinions are like backsides, they’re not always supposed to be aired in public.”
