Lawrence: One of My Best Goals But Massively Disappointed - Ipswich Town News

Season-long loanee
Tom Lawrence may have scored one of the best goals of his career at QPR on Monday but was left “massively disappointed” after the Blues were defeated 2-1 in a game he felt they had dominated.

Lawrence smashed home a brilliant 25-yard strike three minutes after half-time to equalise Idrissa Sylla’s first-half goal for the home side and the Blues looked by far the more likely winners until Pawel Wszolek profited from a Town defensive error to win it for the West Londoners in the 83rd minute.

"Massively disappointed, I thought we dominated the game but we’ve come out with a loss at the end of it,” Lawrence said.

"We’re so inconsistent at minute, we need to learn from this and go again.”

Regarding his goal, the Wales international said: "It was a sweet one, but it didn’t mean for much in the end.

"It’s one of the best I’ve scored, but it didn’t count for much as we didn’t get any points.”

Having played most of his football for Town on the left of a midfield four or front three, manager Mick McCarthy named Lawrence in a central midfield trio at Loftus Road as he started his side in a 3-5-2 system.

"He knows I enjoy that role as well,” the on-loan Leicester man continued. "I can play either way, so I just do the job that he asks.”

Lawrence has now made 18 starts and one sub appearance for Town with Monday’s goal his third of his spell and he says he is benefiting from playing regularly.

"It’s massive for me, I spent last year on loan as well and I think I’m playing the best football I’ve played. I’m enjoying it,” he said.

Lawrence is on a season-long loan with the Blues but his future has been the subject of speculation with claims that Derby, Norwich, Reading, Cardiff and Wigan could all move for him in January.

Quizzed on whether there is anything in the speculation, Lawrence responded: "I don’t know, that’s not on me, is it?”

The Wrexham-born player admits he isn't sure whether Leicester might be able to recall him from his loan during the window - "I don’t know. I’m just playing my football” - however, manager McCarthy recently stated that he will remain at Portman Road for the entire campaign and TWTD understands that Lawrence can’t return to the King Power Stadium in January unless all three parties - the Blues, the Foxes and Lawrence himself - agree to it.

McCarthy has played down the chances of making the signing permanent at the end of the season if any of the division's more monied clubs came in for him.

But Lawrence, whose Leicester contract has 18 months to run, doesn’t rule out remaining at Portman Road if a deal could be done in the summer: "As I said, I’m enjoying my football, so I’ll see what that brings.”

The forward is eligible for Saturday's FA Cup third round tie at home to Lincoln City and hopes the Blues can win their first match in the competition for seven years and face bigger opposition in a later round.

"It’s massive, you win games like that and the big teams [can follow]," he said. "Hopefully we can get through that one.”
