Huws: I Need to Be More Clinical - Ipswich Town News

New recruit Emyr Huws is keen to add more goals during his time with Town after finding the net just seven times in his career so far.

The first of two he netted during a loan spell from Manchester City to Birmingham in 2014 was enough to earn him the Blues’ Goal of the Season award and he contributed five for Huddersfield when he spent the entire 2015/16 campaign there on loan from Wigan.

Huws said: "I’ve got goals in me but I just need to be a bit more clinical and a bit more goals-minded.

"But apart from looking to score goals, I’m always thinking about helping others to get goals and helping my team to win games, which is the most important thing. I’m not going to go out there thinking that I need to score — it’s all about winning games.”

It was put to Huws that Town can’t afford to rely on 10-goal leading scorer Tom Lawrence, who has netted eight in as many games lately, to keep on scoring with such regularity. He laughed: "It seems we can at the minute but I know what you mean. There are definitely goals in this Ipswich team.”

Huws was also asked how he saw the temporary switch to Portman Road. Did he think of it as an opportunity to return to Cardiff and look to move on there or was it perhaps a chance to make a fresh start elsewhere?

He replied: "Who knows? I’m just looking to play football for Ipswich right now, to play well and help them to win games. That’s all I’m looking to do at the minute.

"There are a number of factors why my move to Cardiff last summer hasn’t worked out. It’s just one of those things in football and I can’t really put my finger on it.

"There are a couple of players in my position who are more favoured at the club and they’ve been doing OK, so I think it was time for me to move on and fortunately I’m here in Ipswich and I’m happy.

"It would be nice to settle down but I’m enjoying football, wherever it is, and I’m definitely enjoying it here.

"I’m from Llanelli and they’re massive on rugby there. I played the game until I was about 14 but only at school, although I really enjoyed it when I did play. But it’s been football all the way for me since then.”

Meanwhile, Huws admits he is full of trepidation ahead of Town’s trip to face Aston Villa on Saturday — but going head-to-head against Steve Bruce’s men isn’t responsible for the fear factor.

It’s the thought of the initiation ceremony at the team’s hotel the night before that worries Huws, who will be required to sing a song to his new team-mates, an ordeal that also awaits fellow newcomer Steven Taylor.

"I’ve got one in mind,” laughed Huws. "But I’ll leave that until Friday. I need to get practicing. It’s a pity duets aren’t allowed — bastards!”
