Town got back to form with a 2-0 win at bogey ground Prenton Park.
The Blues lined up 4-4-2 with Croft at left-back, Wilnis at right, Venus and Mowbray in the centre and Jermaine Wright, Magilton, Holland and Clapham in midfield.
Johnson and Scowcroft were up front. Goals in each half from Matt Holland and David Johnson saw Town reclaim second spot.
Holland scored on the rebound from a Jermaine Wright shot and Johnson scored an overhead kick from eight yards out. More on the game tomorrow.
