Sunderland could face a points deduction or a fine after making an illegal approach for Irish youngster Sean Thornton, according to his club Tranmere Rovers.
The 18-year-old midfielder, under contract at Prenton Park until June 30th, admitted signing a five-year deal with Sunderland and joining in training sessions with Peter Reid's side last week, a breach of his Tranmere contract.
Dave Watson, the Rovers manager is unhappy with both club and player: "It seems Sunderland have tried to snatch our player by making an illegal approach — both Sean and Sunderland have shown a complete lack of respect for Tranmere Rovers and the FA and Football League rules which is totally out of order."
Angry chairperson Lorraine Rogers added: "The actions of Sean Thornton and Sunderland are in breach of FA and Football League regulations and we will be making a formal complaint."
According to her club, in these circumstances the FA and Football League can "impose such penalties against the [club or player] as they may in the circumstances think fit."
They say that the FA or Football League have the power to stop the transfer, impose a points deduction or fine against the Black Cats.
Sunderland are three points ahead of the Blues at present with one game remaining for each team, Town with the better goal difference.
