Town goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski has urged fans to rally behind the team during the crucial last lap of the current campaign.
Mick McCarthy and his players have eight games left to ensure they are not dragged into a relegation scrap, with home games against Birmingham and Wigan over the next four days providing an opportunity to climb well clear of the struggle for survival below them.
Bialkowski echoed the comments of boss Mick McCarthy in reminding the Town supporters they have a vital role to play, even if total support has not always been the case in a season of frustration for all interested parties.
He said: "The fans are massive for us and they need to stick with us. I know how disappointed they are at the moment because in each of the last two seasons we proved we could compete against the top teams.
"This season it has been a bit different for us. But that’s football — the fans need to stay behind us because we need them.
"As a footballer you are always looking forward to going to the big stadiums with your fans behind you. The fans are great and we really need them. When we are on the pitch we can hear them and it feels like they are giving you an extra 10 per cent and a lift.
"I hear it more as a keeper, especially away from home when our fans are right behind my goal. Yes, I always hear them.”
Bialkowski and his colleagues hope to emerge from the international break refreshed and ready for the challenge that lies ahead. "I am fresh and ready to go again,” said the Pole.
"I felt we needed a break and I’m sure everyone else felt the same way, because it is such a long season. The break will have helped us to clear our heads and we are all ready to go again.
"We had four days off last week so I spent some time with my family. We went to London for three days, which was really nice, and we did a bit of sightseeing.
"It is important to take a break from football when you can and especially when you suffer a defeat, as we did at Cardiff two weeks ago.
"The ability to switch off and forget about football for a few days comes with experience.
"Sometimes it isn’t easy but when you are older you realise there are lots of games left.
"At the same time you think about whether you could have done more to prevent the team being in this situation but you know you always have to get yourself ready to go again.
"With the games coming thick and fast you need to be ready and I am sure we are.”
Meanwhile, Bialkowski has reiterated his desire to win senior international honours for Poland, and was asked if he thought he would have to be playing in the Premier League to gain recognition.
He replied: "That is my dream, to play in the Premier League, like everyone else. Hopefully, one day it will happen.
"But there are other Championship players in the Poland squad so it’s not about the league, it’s about the players.
"Unfortunately for me there are many good Polish goalies, which makes it hard for me. But it’s good for my country. I am just working hard, waiting for my chance.”
