McCarthy Pleased With Spence - Ipswich Town News

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he’s very pleased with the impact January signing Jordan Spence has made since he joined the club and will talk to the 26-year-old about a new contract once the Blues’ are mathematically safe.

Right-back or wing-back Spence, released by the MK Dons last summer, initially joined the Blues on trial in September and October and eventually signed a short-term deal in January.

"I’m very pleased him,” McCarthy said. "Considering he came in right at the start of the season and I let him go. It got to the January window and he came back in and I thought he had the bit between his teeth then.

"It’s hard coming in on trial, do you really want to tackle people or compete. He came in in the January window and he was different again.

"I don’t have to talk him up because he’s played most of the games. Since he’s got in he’s done really well. I thought he was excellent on Tuesday night.”

Will the former West Ham youngster, who has said he is enjoying his time at Town and would welcome the chance to stay for a longer spell, have to wait until the close season for talks regarding new terms? "Let’s hope it’s not until the summer before we know we’re safe mathematically and then we can talk to him.”
