Town will seeking to reproduce the outstanding form that defeated Newcastle on Easter Monday when they tackle another team with Premier League ambitions in Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.
While the Magpies have gone on to clinch automatic promotion, the Owls are looking for the victory that will ensure their place in the play-offs, although they could still guarantee a top-six finish even if they are beaten at Portman Road and rivals Leeds fail to collect all three points at the expense of Norwich at Elland Road.
Striker David McGoldrick, on target against the Geordies and many people’s choice as man of the match, said: "It was a great performance and it reminded me of how it was back in the old days, 18 months ago and before that, when teams didn’t want to come here because they knew what sort of game they were going to get.
"I don’t think that’s been the case this season and to put it bluntly we haven’t been very good at home this season.
"There was a big crowd and we performed, looking dangerous and hard to beat. We didn’t give them many chances and they are a top team with top Premier League players on top wages. It was a good day for us and the supporters.
"If I knew why we have not been able to play like that often enough this season we would have changed. It’s the million-dollar question.
"I don’t think it was a case of everyone working doubly hard because it was Newcastle. I think we just clicked and in the game before that, at Burton, I thought we also played well. We were threatening, we created chances and we could have scored more goals on the night.
"Against Newcastle we just came out and attacked, and right from the off we got a lift from the crowd. We got the goal through Searsy and from then we looked really good.
"It was the best we had played in a long time and we all want more of that. We don’t want to be losing games at home and going off to boos, even if we deserve it. The boys are hungry to repeat the display against Newcastle again and again.”
McGoldrick agreed that the 25,000-plus crowd provided a welcome boost and added: "I can understand why some people don’t want to come out on a cold Tuesday night when the ticket prices are what they are.
"But with 25,000 against Newcastle it gave us a huge lift. I was looking around and there weren’t many empty seats. It gave us all a buzz and some of the newer lads had never even experienced it before.
"We want to do it again on Saturday. People are talking about us doing it for the integrity of the league and other teams are relying on us but, first and foremost, we’ve got to do it for ourselves and the fans.
"Our fans have seen some bleak games this season but they went home happy after we beat Newcastle.
"We were happy too and we want the same again against Sheffield Wednesday. We don’t want to be coming off to boos and all sorts of chants, things like that. We want to give the fans something to smile about.
"It just makes the weekend and the whole week so much better when that happens.
"But this is football and every team wants to win. No teams come here knowing they are going to lose. They make it hard for us and we haven’t performed at home this year.
"Hopefully we can write off this season and we can go again by starting to build momentum for next season with another good performance on Saturday.”
