Benyu's Aldershot in Play-Off Action - Ipswich Town News
Kundai Benyu and his loan side Aldershot Town are in Vanarama National League play-off action at home to Tranmere Rovers this evening (BT Sport 1, from 6.30pm, KO 7pm)
The Shots, with whom the 19-year-old midfielder has been on loan since December, finished fifth in the National League table, while Rovers ended the season second, 13 points ahead of the Hampshire side. The second leg is at Prenton Park on Saturday.
Benyu has enjoyed a hugely successful spell with Aldershot, scoring five goals in 21 starts and one sub appearance.
Town boss Mick McCarthy has said the club will be taking up a one-year option on his current contract, which was otherwise set to end this summer, and offering the midfielder a new longer-term deal.
Camden-born Benyu, who also qualifies to play for Zimbabwe, is yet to make his senior debut for the Blues but has been on the first-team bench on four occasions.
Meanwhile, second-year academy scholar Kieron Cathline played in an exit trial match at Woking’s Kingfield Stadium last night.
Exit trials are held towards the end of each season to give released scholars a chance to impress scouts from other clubs.
Right-back Cathline, 18, joined the Blues as a full-time scholar in the summer of 2015, having previously spent time with the youth set-ups at Watford and Stevenage.
Elsewhere, Ipswich Town Ladies smashed their Norwich City counterparts 5-1 in last night’s East Anglian derby at Felixstowe and Walton’s Goldstar Ground, Roxanne Small (2) Sophie Welton, Joyce Mlambo and Natasha Thomas scoring the goals.
