McGoldrick in Ireland Squad - Ipswich Town News

Town striker David McGoldrick has been named in the Republic of Ireland squad for their June internationals.

Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane’s side play friendlies against Mexico at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Thursday 1st June and then Uruguay at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday 4th June before they take on Austria in a World Cup qualifier on Sunday 11th June, also athe Aviva Stadium.

A number of players will take part in a three-day training camp at the Fota Island Resort from Tuesday 23rd May before the full squad assembles in Dublin on Sunday 28th May before flying out to New York a day later ahead of the Mexico game.

Speaking about the likelihood of being named in the squad for the games last month, McGoldrick, who has previously won five full caps so far without scoring an international goal, said he was looking forward to being involved.

"We’ve got friendlies against Mexico and Uruguay and then Austria in a World Cup qualifier,” the 29-year-old said. "It will be good to get called up for them.

"I find when we break up for the summer I’m itching to come back after a week or so of the wife nagging at me.

"It’s fitness as well — you don’t have to go out for runs on your own because you’ve got the training and the games for Ireland, and you’re not switching off for too long.

"If I’m called up I’ll be working with top Premier League players and you learn from the experience. I’m just little old McGoldrick from Ipswich when I’m playing with some of the strikers there.

"It’s good to go there sometimes because it’s a real good atmosphere in and around the squad.”

Former Blues Jon Walters, Daryl Murphy and Conor Hourihane are also in the squad.
