Former Millwall Full-Back Cummings Featured in Friendly - Ipswich Town News

TWTD understands former Millwall right-back Shaun Cummings played for the Blues in Tuesday’s behind closed doors friendly against Southend at Playford Road which Town won 4-1. The 28-year-old is a free agent with his Lions contract having been up at the end of last season.

Cummings is understood to have featured in the second half of the game in which Blues boss Mick McCarthy fielded a different team in each half.

The Hammersmith-born full-back came through the youth system at Chelsea and went on loan to the MK Dons and West Brom while with the Premier League champions.

Having been unable to break into the first team at Stamford Bridge, Cummings moved on to Reading, where his former Chelsea academy coach Brendan Rodgers was then manager, in the summer of 2009.

After six years at the Madejski Stadium in which he was a regular in the team which topped the Championship in 2011/12, 6ft tall Cummings moved on to Millwall in the summer of 2015.

The three-times-capped Jamaica international made 53 starts and two sub appearances for the Lions, scoring three times, and was part of the squad which returned to the Championship via May's League One play-offs, although he missed the second semi-final against Scunthorpe and the 1-0 final victory over Bradford at Wembley due to a hamstring injury.

Cummings failed to return to Millwall for the start of pre-season training at the end of last month having rejected the offer of a new contract.

Town are need of another right-back as cover for Jordan Spence with Josh Emmanuel having been allowed to join Rotherham on loan earlier today in order to gain first-team experience.

It's understood that the delay in confirming Emmanuel's move to the Millers related to the lack of back-up to first-choice Spence.
