Town Defender Move Set to Go Right to Deadline - Ipswich Town News

Town’s attempt to add another central defender to their squad looks set to go right to this evening's 11pm deadline.

Brighton’s Connor Goldson remains the most likely addition with the Seagulls continuing to look for another centre-half which would put them in a position to allow the 24-year-old former Shrewsbury man to join the Blues on a season-long loan.

As TWTD revealed this morning, Goldson was at Town earlier today to undergo a medical and complete the formalities relating to his proposed switch, which was then put on hold after Brighton’s move to take Club Brugge defender Stefano Denswil broke down.

Meanwhile, the Blues are also working on an alternative target - Derby’s Jason Shackell is understood to be among the players to have been sounded out - in case the Goldson deal cannot be completed before the deadline.

Nottingham Forest central defender Jack Hobbs, who was linked with Town over the weekend, is set to stay at the City Ground with the East Midlanders unwilling to allow him to move on, while Swedish side Djurgåden have confirmed that 34-year-old Jonas Olsson will not be leaving them during this window.

Elsewhere, former Blues defender Alex Bruce, 32, has joined League One Wigan Athletic for the rest of the season having recently ended a short non-contract spell with Bury.

The Blues are desperately in need of another centre-half with skipper Luke Chambers, Tommy Smith and Adam Webster all out injured. Jordan Spence and Jonas Knudsen, both primarily full-backs, have filled in at the centre of the defence for the last two games.

If Town are unable to sign anyone before 11pm then they will be unable to recruit anyone other than players who are out of contract until January with the emergency loan option having been scrapped last summer.
