McCarthy and Waghorn Nominated for Awards - Ipswich Town News

Town boss Mick McCarthy has been nominated for the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month award for August, while summer signing Martyn Waghorn is up for the Player of the Month gong.

The Blues picked up 12 points from 15 in the opening month of the campaign and ended August in second place.

McCarthy, 58, is up against Cardiff manager Neil Warnock, whose side top the division with a 100 per cent record, new Leeds boss Thomas Christiansen, whose team are third and unbeaten a point behind the Blues, and another summer appointee, Nuno Espírito Santo, whose Wolves side are fourth with 10 points.

The Town boss has previously won the award five times, once with Sunderland, twice with Wolves and in September 2014 and November 2015 while with the Blues.

Waghorn, 27, joined Town from Rangers in August and scored four goals in his first three Championship games before drawing a blank in the 2-0 defeat to Fulham in the month’s final match.

The former Rangers striker is up against Cardiff midfielder Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, who also scored four Championship goals in the opening month - plus another in the Carabao Cup - Sheffield United frontman Billy Sharp, who again netted four times and Preston defender Darnell Fisher. The winners of both awards will be announced on Friday morning.
