McCarthy: Loan Duo Delighted With Winning Debut - Ipswich Town News

Blues boss Mick McCarthy says Adam McDonnell and George Fowler were both delighted to get their loan spell at Aldershot off to a winning start last weekend, the Shots having beaten Solihull Moors 1-0 at the Recreation Ground.

Midfielder McDonnell, 20, and central defender or right-back Fowler, 19, have joined the Vanarama National League side for an initial month.

"They were delighted, I contacted them by text after the game, asking them how they got on, did they enjoy it, what did they think,” McCarthy said.

"George was delighted because he got a clean sheet and they won 1-0. Adam played well he said and Adam’s pretty hard on himself so he wouldn’t be saying that unless he did.

"And then the feedback I got, Bryan Klug went to watch them and he said they both played well, it was a good performance.”

Regarding players being critical of their own displays, he added: "You want them to analyse themselves and their performance but there are some that are too hard on themselves and everything they do doesn’t seem to be right.

"But it certainly wasn’t that and I think, from what I gather, both of them were very, very good and it was a great result for them, 1-0 going in. They can’t do any more than that, and especially George, a clean sheet, he was thrilled by it.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy says the England U19s staff were pleased with Town pair Tristan Nydam and Flynn Downes while they were away with them during the international break.

Nydam, 17, won his first cap but suffered an injury in Friday’s 7-1 victory over Poland, while Downes, 18, made his debut in Monday’s 3-1 defeat to Germany.

"They were thrilled with him, really delighted with Tristan and I think with Flynn as well, he only played an hour.

"But they were really pleased with them both, although I can’t imagine they’d be anything else.”
