Smith and Webster Feature for U23s in Friendly Defeat at Charlton - Ipswich Town News

Central defenders Tommy Smith and Adam Webster were both in a Blues U23s side which lost 3-0 to Charlton in a behind-close-doors friendly at the League One club’s Sparrows Lane training ground this afternoon.

Smith played an hour of first game since suffering a hamstring injury in training in August having made his only senior appearance of the campaign so far in the opening day victory over Birmingham City at Portman Road.

Webster, who completed the full 90 minutes against the Addicks, has played two previous U23s games and was a second-half sub for the first team during Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to Bristol City having picked up an ankle injury in the Carabao Cup tie at Luton, also in August.

Myles Kenlock and Ben Folami were also among those involved for the Blues, while winger Mark Marshall scored twice for Charlton and Freddy Yao the home side's third goal.

"Town’s U23s, who are coached by Gerard Nash, are currently third in the Professional Development League Two South and face Bristol City in their next fixture at Portman Road on Monday (KO 7pm).

Meanwhile, Town are in the early stages of organising a big screen event at Portman Road which will take place in the close season.

The club is keeping tightlipped on the precise nature of the event but it’s understood to have a direct connection to the Blues but also to football more widely.
