Smith and Patterson in All Whites World Cup Play-Off Squad - Ipswich Town News
Town duo Tommy Smith and Monty Patterson have been named in the New Zealand squad for their two-legged intercontinental World Cup qualifying play-off against Peru during the international break. A place at next summer’s finals in Russia awaits the tie’s winners.
The All Whites, who won the Oceania qualification process, face the Peruvians, fifth in the South American qualifying group, in the first leg in Wellington on Saturday 11th November with the second game in Lima four days later.
Central defender Smith, 27, has previously won 35 full caps and has scored two goals, while 20-year-old Patterson has played for his country 15 times, scoring one international goal.
Smith will be aiming to appear at his second World Cup finals having played all three of New Zealand's matches in South Africa in 2010.
The Macclesfield-born defender, who qualifies for the All Whites having been brought up in New Zealand between the ages of eight and 16, also featured for an U23s side at the 2012 London Olympics.
