Knudsen Unused Sub But Downes Wins Third U19s Cap - Ipswich Town News

Blues left-back Jonas Knudsen was an unused sub as Denmark and the Republic of Ireland drew 0-0 in the first leg of their World Cup qualification play-off in Copenhagen, but midfielder Flynn Downes won his third England U19s cap as the Young Lions beat Iceland 2-1 in the second game of their European Championships qualification mini-group at the Trace Arena in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria.

Denmark and Ireland meet again in the second leg of their tie at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Tuesday with a place at next summer’s finals in Russia awaiting the winner.

Knudsen, 25, will be hoping to win his third full international cap - and his first since joining Town - in that match.

Downes, 18, played the full 90 minutes as the England U19s made it two wins out of two to lead the group ahead of the hosts, who they play in their final game on Tuesday, on goal difference.

The top two nations go through to the elite round of qualifying which will be held in March. The finals are in Finland in July next year.

England are defending the title they won in Georgia in the summer, a team which featured Blues midfielder Andre Dozzell, who still qualifies for the U19s but is out injured, almost certainly for the whole season.

Elsewhere, on-loan duo Adam McDonnell and George Fowler were in the Aldershot side which beat AFC Fylde 2-1 at home in the Vanarama National League, the Irish midfielder creating their late winner.

86 mins, GOAL!!!

Shots free-kick, right-channel, McDonnell drives it in, Rendell's heel flicks it over to beyond the far-post and Will Evans nods it in from the tightest angle, ultimately via Lynch's knee

Centre-half Chris Smith was in the Chelmsford team which were beaten 2-1 at home by Oxford City in the National League South.

Keeper Nick Hayes started for Dunstable as they lost 2-1 at St Ives in the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division.

Harry Wright was in goal for East Thurrock United as they were thrashed 4-0 at Bath City - for whom ex-Blue Matt Richards was making his debut - in the National League South.
