Keane Exit Helps Matt? - Ipswich Town News

Shock news that Republic of Ireland captain Roy Keane has been sent home from Japan gives a further boost to Matt Holland's chances of featuring in the Irish starting line-up. Keane was sent packing today by manager Mick McCarthy just days before the start of the competition.

Keane had a row with goalkeeping coach Packie Bonner earlier this week and almost returned home after that. However, he was persuaded to stay, but announced his international retirement after the World Cup yesterday.

However, the straw which broke the camel's back appears to be an interview in today's Irish Times in which he heavily criticised Irish facilties.

Keane's absence makes Matt Holland a virtual certainty to start in the Ireland side alongside Charlton's Mark Kinsella.

Holland was expecting to play after starting the Nigeria game which Mick McCarthy said featured his strongest side.

Former Colchester man Kinsella and Holland have vied for the central midfield place alongside Keane for the last couple of years.
