Cole Skuse is fit again but David McGoldrick is a doubt ahead of Saturday’s game against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, while there’s good news on Tom Adeyemi, whose injury setback in the U23s is nothing too serious.
"I’ve got 19 of the squad up on the board today,” Manager Mick McCarthy said at his pre-match press conference, "And those 19 players are pretty good.
"Didzy wasn’t up because he’s not trained, he’s been injured since the weekend.
"Tristan Nydam, he played for the U18s on Tuesday, he was still feeling a bit tight, but other than those two and the long-term injuries, we’d got a good squad out. Didzy is a doubt, I would say, having not trained today.”
Regarding Skuse, he added: "He trained today, he’s all ready to go. Stephen Gleeson’s done very, very well and he’s done everything I’d expect of him in that holding midfield role, if you like.
"He’s a really good passer of the ball Glees, I’ve been delighted with him, but equally it’s nice to have Skusey back, who has been pretty much ever-present since he came here.”
Could Skuse and Gleeson play together in the same midfield? "Yes but I think Callum Connolly would have a real problem with me telling him he needs a rest, that might cause a right problem.
"I think if I said, ‘Listen, this is the team I’m picking, today I’m going with these’ then there’s no argument but if I said I was going to give him a rest I think he’d be banging my door down because he’s a pretty fit, athletic lad. I’ve not seem too many that look after themselves like he does.”
Dean Gerken remains sidelined with his ongoing hip problem which could require an operation.
"It’s not going away so we’ll keep on top of that,” McCarthy added. "We’ll see. Will it need surgery? Let’s wait and see. We’re just hoping he’s going to be all right whatever ends up happening.
"Michael Crowe is the back-up now, that’s the case and if he gets the chance. He’s not had any games though, so there may be somebody available, I don’t know.”
Adeyemi lasted only 34 minutes of the U23s’ 5-0 hammering of Millwall on Monday after he suffering an injury being quickly being subbed.
"Thankfully, it wasn’t as bad [as it looked], McCarthy continued, "He pulled up but I would imagine poor old Tom, he’s felt it and he’s just going to stop instantly. I think it looked far worse than what it actually is. That’s the good news. But nevertheless, he’s still got an injury.”
Cameron Carter-Vickers was back in training today having suffered a knock last Saturday and is expected to be fine for the trip to the Stadium of Light, where Town have never won.
Dominic Iorfa is available again having been ineligible against his parent club Wolves last week.
Emyr Huws, Andre Dozzell and Teddy Bishop all remain sidelined with knee injuries which have ruled them out for the season.
