McCarthy: Hyam Needs More Games Before Decision Made on Future - Ipswich Town News

Town boss Mick McCarthy says midfielder Luke Hyam needs to play more football before a decision can be made on his future.

The 26-year-old Ipswich-born academy product made his first start since the end of the 2015/16 season against Cardiff on Wednesday following a succession of injuries.

Speaking yesterday, Hyam said he is playing for his Town future with his contract up in the summer, although with the club having an option to keep him for an additional year.

"He can’t do anything else and understandably from the club’s point of view, if you’ve got a player that’s been injured,” McCarthy said.

"Everybody can have an opinion on this and they can be screaming about it, it could be agents, it could be Luke, it could be me, it could be Marcus, the boss, but everybody’s just got to be calm about it and let him play.

"And I thought he was excellent the other night. He was back and he looked like the old Luke Hyam.

"There’s an option on him, the club have the option and if they want to keep him it’s up to them.

"I’m sure Luke would want it to be sorted out but he’s had one game [he’s started] in 18 months, so let’s just all calm down, let him have some more football and let’s hope he stays fit and let’s hope we want to keep him and he wants to stay.”
