Webster Hoping to Take "Massive Win" at Preston into Hull Clash - Ipswich Town News

Town defender Adam Webster and his colleagues are anxious that Saturday’s scheduled home clash with struggling Hull City survives the Arctic weather.

Having pulled off one of their best results of the season so far in winning 1-0 at in-form Preston last weekend, the players are keen to take their form into the visit of the fifth-bottom Tigers to Portman Road.

Webster, 23, said: "Preston had been on an unbelievable run, losing just once in their previous 17 league games, so we knew it was going to be a tough game.

"It was a massive win for us because we had been disappointed with our two results before Preston and we felt we should have had more points on the board.

"But the performances against both Norwich and Cardiff were very good, which was pleasing, and we didn’t get too down about it because we knew we had been playing well.

"We felt it was only a matter of time before we got the win that we deserved.”

The win came courtesy of a first-half goal from recent signing Mustapha Carayol, who was making his full debut, and the former Nottingham Forest winger immediately caught the eye of his new teammates when he arrived.

Webster added: "You could see on Saturday how much of a threat he is, not just with his pace but with his quality on the ball. That was a big factor for us and hopefully he can keep doing it.

"He’s a tricky customer, as I know from training. He’s sharp, very quick and he’s got the quality of a top Championship player — and thankfully he’s in our team.

"It was good to win with a clean sheet because that was what was disappointing about our previous two games.

"Conceding so late in the derby left us all gutted because we felt we should have won it.

"In the Cardiff game we played well and we were only beaten by a scrappy goal, which on another day could have been disallowed for handball.

"We felt like we should have had clean sheets in both these games and we’d be three points better off if we had done.

"It was really pleasing that we were able to get over the line on Saturday without conceding and we’re looking to take it forward to Hull at home on Saturday if it goes ahead.”

Webster is delighted to have featured regularly in recent weeks, manager Mick McCarthy favouring a back-three formation, because prior to the switch he was being kept out of the starting line-up by Tottenham Hotspur loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers.

The ex-Portsmouth player said: "From a personal point of view I’m pleased to be back in the side. I had a little Achilles injury, which was frustrating because I had been playing every week until then, but I’m back now.

"Cam has done well since coming in and we’d had some good results so I just had to be patient. In that situation you have to do well in training, which I felt I had done, and now that I’m back in the side it’s all about trying to make sure I stay in.

"I wasn’t knocking on the gaffer’s door or anything like that. Cam had done well, the results were alright and I didn’t think I could say too much. I just got my head down and waited for my chance.

"We obviously worked on playing three at the back and I feel it definitely suits us. We all know our roles and responsibilities so we know what to do and I think it’s been enjoyable for all of us.

"I’m happy playing on the left hand side. Chambo prefers playing in the middle of the three and I prefer the left because it suits me and I enjoy it.

"With the extra bit of security at the back it gives me a chance to step out with the ball and that’s something I like to do when the time is right.

"I feel I’ve got a lot of football left in me and I had the same feeling last year after I was injured in January and only just got back before the end of the season.

"I didn’t want it to end then but we’ve still got 12 games to go this year and I’m looking to finish it strongly.

"I’m 100 per cent confident now — in fact ever since I’ve been back it’s been absolutely fine. It had to settle down and thankfully it has done.”
