Town midfielder Flynn Downes played the full 90 minutes as the England U19s beat Hungary 4-1 in their opening European Championships elite qualifying mini-group game in Skopje this afternoon. The 19-year-old, who is on loan at Luton, was winning his fourth U19s cap.
Having gone behind six minutes before the break, Chelsea’s Mason Mount equalised for England on 48, Arsenal Nelson netted on 54 and 86 to give them a two-goal lead, then Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho added the fourth a minute later.
The England youngsters face Latvia in their second game on Saturday and the hosts next Tuesday.
Fellow Blues midfielder Tristan Nydam, 18, was also named in the squad but pulled out having suffered a knock in last week’s 3-0 defeat to Hull City.
If England win their group they will reach the finals in Finland in July where they will defend the title they won in Georgia last summer, a team which featured currently-injured Blues midfielder Andre Dozzell, who still qualifies for the U19s.
