Doig Excited By Return to Championship - Ipswich Town News

New assistant boss Chris Doig says he’s excited about the prospect of working in the Championship with Town having played at that level for Nottingham Forest.

The 37-year-old Dumfries-born former centre-half was with Forest between 1997 and 2005, making 76 starts and 17 sub appearances, scoring once, a spell which included periods in each of the top three divisions but mainly the second tier.

He later played alongside Luke Chambers at Northampton prior to the skipper’s own spell at at the City Ground.

The ex-Scotland U18 and U21 international, who also played for hometown club Queen of the South, Central Coast Mariners in Australia, Indonesian side Pelita Jaya, Aldershot, York City and Grimsby Town, followed new manager Paul Hurst from Shrewsbury having previously been his assistant at Blundell Park.

"I’ve played in the Championship and I know what a slog it is,” Doig told iFollow Ipswich.

"It’s a massive challenge for me and the gaffer, we know that, but we are really excited at the prospect of working at the club and competing in the Championship and hopefully being successful.

"We are not big on setting targets. We will see how pre-season goes and take it from there but we are big on the players enjoying being at work, enjoying their football and hopefully that will show out on the pitch.”
