Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray believes his old club are “in good hands” under Paul Hurst and the former Blues skipper, coach and caretaker-manager rates the players who are in the new Town boss’s sights in the final few days of the transfer window.
Mowbray admitted his side felt they should have held on to their lead, Tayo Edun netting a debut injury time equaliser for the Blues as the game ended 2-2.
"The dressing room is very disappointed and frustrated, they’re all discussing what we might have done to prevent that at the end,” the man known as Mogga said.
"I genuinely felt that they were struggling to get near our goal, it wasn’t as if there was a siege, we were seeing it off alright, to be honest.
"If Kasey Palmer had have scored the goal that he should have where it was cleared off the line I’m sure [we would have won].
"But I’ve just been told there were a lot of late goals in the Championship, it’s the league it is. No team gives in, everybody keeps going.
"So, a massive disappointment for us. And yet would we have taken it away from home on a scorching hot day at Portman Road with a new manager, crowd up for the game before kick-off? Probably. And yet we are disappointed.”
He added: "I wasn’t overly sure what Paul would do today because I know he hasn’t got the team he wants at this moment.
"I see some of the names he’s trying to sign and there’s some talented footballers there. Gwion Edwards would show you that today. So if you’re an Ipswich-minded person, you can see Edwards, you can see Ellis Harrison.
"I’ve seen the names, Jon Nolan is an exceptionally good footballer, if he’s coming in, Toto Nsiala’s just a big, athletic centre-half, I’m not telling you anything that you don’t know probably.
"I think the club’s in good hands. Having managed in a league where he managed last year, and with total respect Shrewsbury Town is a very small club even in League One, he performed miracles with that team.
"I feel as if the club’s in pretty good hands, but time will tell as the season unfolds how he deals with this league. I’m not sure he’s managed in it before, but I obviously have an Ipswich mind having been here for nine years and want them to do well.
"After today, as I said to a lot of people I met when I first came in the building, after today I wish you a really good season.
"I think the club has made a good decision with this coach and hopefully we can both have good seasons.”
Is he surprised that many bookies have Town down for relegation? "I would suggest that Paul wouldn’t take one iota of notice of that, he’s got to use that as a motivation to his group.
"I’m just telling you what I felt last year playing Shrewsbury Town, that if they do sign Jon Nolan... and the evidence is there, looking at Edwards today, scored a goal and he was like Billy Whizz on the right wing at times!
"They’ve got some good players. Harrison will score goals. It’s whether he’s effective or not today, he runs, he chases, he’s in the box, he can head a goal, he can shoot off his right foot particularly. He’s a handful for any defender.
"And if he gets the ones I see [he’s after], I’m hearing Kayden Jackson, never stops running, fast as lightning, just keeps chasing the ball, I think they’ll be fine and take no notice of what the bookies might say.”
