Wigan Join Bolton in Targeting Garner - Ipswich Town News

TWTD understands Wigan have joined Bolton in showing interest in striker Joe Garner ahead of the closure of the transfer window at 5pm this afternoon.

The Trotters have long been known to want the 30-year-old, who is believed to be keen on a return to the North-West, but now the Latics are also targeting the former Preston frontman.

Speaking at his press conference earlier this afternoon, manager Paul Hurst ruled out left-back Jonas Knudsen, who was interesting Stoke and Middlesbrough, moving on today but was less sure about Garner’s situation.

"As I sit here I don’t think any of them will be leaving, but it is a transfer window in football and you’re never quite sure,” he said.

"I certainly think with Jonas I’d expect him 100 per cent still to be here. I think with Joe it might be slightly different but again, I haven’t been told that anything’s looking likely on that front. So, I think it’ll be as we are in terms of the squad going forward.”

Would he prefer to have signed another striker before allowing the former Rangers man to depart?

"I think in an ideal world, we probably would but again he might not be going anywhere yet. It’s a difficult one because Joe’s clearly an experienced player and he’s different to a lot of what I’ve been speaking about,” Hurst added.

"That experience could be vital for us. Joe’s situation isn’t an absolutely straightforward one. But we’ll see what these next couple of hours bring and then thankfully I’ll be able to ignore my phone for a little while, although as I’ve mentioned we will be looking at loan opportunities between now and the close of the window, the second closure if you like.”
