Gwion Edwards is pleased with how he has started a new chapter in his career with Town and believes he can carry on improving as he and his colleagues prepare to face Middlesbrough at Portman Road tomorrow night in a live-on-Sky game for the first time in the current campaign.
"I’ve had an okay start to be fair, scored two goals and provided an assist, but I think there’s a lot more to come,” said winger Edwards, who was one of many new arrivals in the summer.
"Hopefully, I can continue to provide assists and create chances for the team so we can get more goals, and if I can get goals myself that will be a bonus.
"I’ve been on the teamsheet for every game really. Okay, I wasn’t in the team for the Brentford game but I came on at half-time. It’s what every player wants, to be playing regularly, and I hope it continues.
"The gaffer keeps telling me to be positive and get at my man, mix the game up and get the crosses in. That’s my game, it’s what I like to do. I love to attack, take defenders on and deliver crosses into the box.
"Defending is also part of the job for a winger these days, so I make sure I get back to help out my full-back, and hopefully he’ll be there to help me out when I get doubled up.”
Edwards, who launched his career with local club Swansea and is looking forward to returning to the Liberty Stadium this weekend, netted his second goal for the club in the 1-1 home draw with Norwich — and he admits it was a moment that will live with him forever.
"When the ball hit the back of the net I was a bit surprised because it took a bit of a deflection,” he recalled. "But the roar from our fans as I ran off to celebrate is probably one of the best feelings I’ve had in my whole career.
"I love to get among the goals. I have set myself a target for the season but I’m keeping it to myself. I don’t like to put it out there. But I back myself to get a few more and I keep working on it in training.
"Hopefully, when the chances come and I’m in the right area, I’ll stick the ball in the back of the net.”
Town’s search for that elusive first win of the season recommences tomorrow night with a visit from a Boro side who look like living up to their pre-season billing by the bookies as one of the main contenders for promotion to the Premier League.
Tony Pulis’s team come here after successive league draws at home to Swansea and at Hull at the weekend but they have only lost one Championship game this season, 1-0 at Norwich, which leaves them third in the table just a point adrift of leaders West Bromwich Albion.
Edwards continued: "Middlesbrough are doing well in the Championship this year and it will be a tough game tomorrow night — but every game in the Championship is tough.
"We’ll prepare the right way and we’ll go into the game like we always do, confident and ready to bring the three points home.
"I came here to play in the Championship and test myself every week, especially against the bigger teams.
"It’s live on Sky as well, so there will be more people watching and that gives us an extra incentive to go out there, play well, show what we can do and hopefully get that first win we all want.
"I think Middlesbrough will be up there this season. They’re third in the table now and if they don’t go up automatically they will definitely finish in the top six.
"It’s like every game, we want to start well, get momentum and take a grip of the game. An early lead would be great to build on.”
Meanwhile, Edwards is also keen to attract the attention of Welsh international boss Ryan Giggs and represent his country, something that has been an ambition for a long time.
"I was on the bench twice for the European 2016 qualifiers and I was in the provisional squad for the last two games,” he said. "But when it was narrowed down I wasn’t picked.
"Hopefully, one day I will get the chance. There’s been a good atmosphere around the squad for a few years now and they’ve done well.
"Ryan Giggs has come in and he’s a big name. I would love the chance to show everyone what I can do.”
