Hurst: Wales Call-Up a Boost for Edwards - Ipswich Town News

Blues boss Paul Hurst says Gwion Edwards being called into the Wales squad will give the winger's confidence a boost. The 25-year-old has made an impressive start to his Town career having signed from Peterborough United for an initial £600,000 in the summer.

Edwards was a late addition to the Wales squad early this week and was an unused sub in their 1-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Tuesday. It was the uncapped wideman’s first call-up since 2015 during his time as a Crawley player.

"That can only do his confidence the world of good as will Jonas getting a game [for Denmark],” Hurst said. "He’s often been in the squads but has not seen too much game time.

"For all of [those called up] and for the group, it shows we’ve got some decent players and we hope that they can continue to be part of their national squads, but most importantly from our point of view and a selfish one is that they can try and perform for Ipswich Town.”

Reflecting on Edwards’s start to the season, he added: "We’ve spoken at times about it not being easy because of how results have gone, so to come in from a league below and perform how he’s done [has been impressive].

"A typical winger in some respects, at times he’s done really well, at other times that end product has not really been there or not quite having had the impact that you want, but I think that’s natural.

"But it’s shows that he has done well, he has been noticed. He was on standby for the previous squad and in this one once there was an injury.

"And although he didn’t get on it’ll have been a great experience and hopefully if he can go again he’ll feel a lot more comfortable in his surroundings and hopefully get that first cap."
