Town Open to Discussion on Change to Stadium Drinking Law - Ipswich Town News

Town are supporting a review of the law which prohibits supporters from drinking alcohol at football grounds within sight of the pitch.

The law, which was introduced in 1985, means fans can drink on concourses but not in their seats.

A Town spokesman told TWTD that they are "open to a discussion” regarding the issue, while talkSport report that Sunderland, Doncaster Rovers, Accrington Stanley, Port Vale, Forest Green Rovers, Lincoln City, Tranmere Rovers and Northampton Town are keen for a pilot scheme to be introduced.

Grimsby Town, Newport County and Gillingham are other clubs who would welcome discussion.

Outlining the argument for change, League One Sunderland told talkSPORT: "At the Stadium of Light, concert-goers can watch Kings of Leon whilst enjoying a pint, but cannot when watching their football team. This seems discriminatory to football fans.”

The FA would be willing to talk to other football authorities "if clubs were in favour of change”, while a Home Office spokesperson said: "We are satisfied that existing legislation is necessary and appropriate.”

In 2013, former Blues chief executive Simon Clegg wrote to the FA and EFL calling for a change in the law.
