Boss Paul Lambert insists he can still keep the Blues in the Championship with hard work and “financial support over the next few weeks” of the transfer window, despite believing he has never had to “rebuild a club or turn things around as much” as he does at Town.
The Blues' season of woe hit another low at Accrington Stanley on Saturday when they were beaten 1-0 by the League One club to exit the FA Cup at the first hurdle for the ninth successive season.
Town, bottom of the table, 10 points plus goal difference from safety, face a crucial game against fourth-bottom Rotherham United at Portman Road on Saturday at which the club are staging a ticket promotion.
"I still believe I can keep this club in the Championship,” Lambert said. "It’s going to take a lot of hard work and I need financial support over the next few weeks of the window, but it can be done.
"I came into this job with my eyes open. I knew it was going to be difficult, but it’s only when you go into the fabric of the club that you truly understand what you are dealing with.
"What has gone on here in the past is not acceptable. There has got to be a lot of changes going forwards.
"First things first, we need more bodies in as fast as possible. I have never had to rebuild a club or turn things around as much as I do here. But I know it can be done.”
The Blues have already added Hull City striker Will Keane and Leicester City left-back Callum Elder to their squad during the window.
On Saturday, Lambert said he hoped to add "a couple” of further signings early this week with Cardiff City winger Anthony Pilkington and Huddersfield forward Collin Quaner among those understood to be in talks.
