Gwion Edwards has highlighted the most disappointing aspect of a season in which Town have been bottom virtually the entire time and which sees them firm favourites to drop into League One next term.
The Blues are currently rock-bottom and 12 points — plus goal difference — from safety and the Welshman said: "The most frustrating thing about this season is that most teams in our situation usually get battered most weeks and that’s not been the case with us.
"We’ve been in most of our games this season and there have been plenty of occasions when we should have won or at least drawn, instead of losing.
"The recent game at Wigan was a good example when we had 10 men for a long time but defended well to hold on to our 1-0 lead, only to concede right at the end and have to settle for a point instead of all three.”
Asked if he felt it could be a psychological thing that Town have failed consistently to turn performances into points, Edwards added: "It could be a number of things and I don’t think we have hit the nail on the head as to exactly what it is down to.
"We go out every week fighting and we work hard every day in training to try and put things right. We’re still together in the dressing room and we’ll be going for it again on Saturday and in all the games we have left this season.”
Town’s biggest defeats this season were in losing 3-0 on three occasions, at Millwall, QPR and Norwich, and Edwards continued: "We haven’t really been battered all season and thrashed by four or five goals.
"We’ve been in games we should have won and our own mistakes have let us down. If we can cut them out, sooner rather than later, hopefully we can still turn it around.
"It’s always a team effort and you can’t single anyone out for blame. A lot of us have made mistakes here and there throughout the season.
"Sometimes you might have a dig at someone but you do it in the right way and you pick them up to give their confidence a boost.
"We’ve got experienced guys in the team like the skipper, Cole Skuse and James Collins, and Gerks is a big member of the squad too.
"We’re still fighting and even teams at the top will have a discussion — when they lose a game they were expected to win for example. We’ve been a good, tight-knit group this year and we’ll continue to fight.”
It has been football’s equivalent of being thrown in at the deep end for Edwards and several other own players new to the Championship this season. "You’re always striving to improve, every day in training and with every game you play,” said Edwards.
"This is my first season in the Championship and I thought I hit the ground running and started it really well.
"It’s just a shame we have found ourselves in this situation fighting relegation but in my second season, whatever league we are in, I would expect to do better.
"I think I have improved as a player this season. I’ve learned a lot that will stand me in good stead later in my career.”
Meanwhile, Edwards revealed he had received a phone call from Welsh national boss Ryan Giggs earlier in the season.
He explained: "I was in the squad in October and then Ryan rang me before the announcement of the next squad the following month, just to let me know I wasn’t going to be involved.
"I thought it was good of him to make that call because it made me realise I am still close to being in the squad, on the edge if you like.
‘If I get picked it will be great and a few good performances and goals for Ipswich between now and the end of the season will definitely help to earn me a call-up.”
