Lambert: Playford Road Shut Down and Cleaned to Get Rid of Sickness Bug - Ipswich Town News

Town boss Paul Lambert has revealed that the club's Playford Road training ground underwent a deep clean earlier in the week in an attempt to get rid of the sickness bug which has affected the squad for a number of weeks.

Matthew Pennington, Dean Gerken and Flynn Downes all missed the game at Bristol City on Tuesday having become the latest victims of the bug.

While they recovered and the rest of the squad were away in the South West, the training ground, which is used by the senior players but also academy scholars and schoolboys, underwent a thorough clean.

"We had it cleaned the other day, we had to shut it down and get it cleaned,” Lambert said. "The building’s not big enough to hold every age group, it’s big enough but that’s the way it is.

"You’ve so many illnesses and bugs going round. Some people have had it twice, let alone once, It’s a situation I’ve not really encountered where there’s been that much of it lasting for a few months. One or two lads have had it not just once but a couple of times.”

Does he believe that the problem should now be resolved? "I thought that the other week until Matty Pennington pulled out, he put the jinx on it, him.

"You asked me last week whether there was still any illness about and I said no and on Friday morning I woke up and I found out Pennington and Downes were struggling with it.”

Meanwhile, there are builders at Playford Road at present converting what was previously an ice bath room into a recovery room.
