The Sailmakers Shopping Centre is hosting a six-week photo exhibition in tribute to Blues legend Kevin Beattie.
The display features iconic photos of Beattie, who died aged 64 in September last year, curated by the Ipswich Town Heritage Society and aims to raise awareness of the The Beat Goes On campaign for a statue of the former Blues and England defender.
The exhibition has been organised by lifelong fan and supporter liaison officer Elizabeth Edwards, who leads the heritage society to "safeguard and celebrate" the history of the club along with her husband Tim, and is also a member of The Beat Goes On committee.
"Sailmakers have kindly given us use of one of their unused units and we've put together a display on Kevin Beattie,” Edwards said.
"It features his life and career and includes plenty of pictures fans have taken over the years. Our Clacton [Supporters Club] branch for example provided old photos from events they've held over the years.
"The Beat loved the fans and always wanted to give back. In one of the windows we've got big display boards and then the main window at the front is dedicated to the statue campaign.
"We've got a big picture of the design which is of Kevin jumping up to head the ball, it's lovely. There is information about how you can get involved and donate as well as upcoming events.
"The exhibition is a fantastic sight and Sailmakers have provided a great location for us to get the message out. Anything we can do to raise awareness helps the campaign.
"We've now raised over £80,000 which is our first major milestone as Sean can now start work on the statue. He's an amazing sculptor.”
Sailmakers Shopping Centre manager Mike Sorhaindo added: "Kevin Beattie really was an iconic figure at Ipswich, an absolute legend, and but for injury could well have gone on to become as big a star for England as he was for Ipswich.
"That’s why we were delighted at Sailmakers to be able to help out with this extremely worthy cause so the statue of the club’s greatest ever player can take its place alongside its greatest managers.”
Led by the EADT and Ipswich Star in conjunction with BBC Radio Suffolk and TWTD, The Beat Goes On campaign was launched on December 18th last year on what would have been Beattie’s 65th birthday.
The current target is £110,000, although it is hoped that figure will be reduced as the campaign progresses, with £80,000 already having been raised.
