Blues striker Aaron Drinan won his fifth Republic of Ireland U21 cap as his side were beaten 4-3 on penalties by Mexico in the third/fourth play-off at the Maurice Revello Toulon Tournament following a 0-0 draw, the second between the teams at the competition.
Drinan made his first U21s start before being replaced in the 77th minute with the game going straight to spot-kicks following the goalless 90 minutes.
The 21-year-old will now return to Town ahead of the start of pre-season training a week on Monday, Waterford having announced on Wednesday that his loan back in the League of Ireland, which was due to run to the end of the month, had been ended early.
Drinan’s seven goals for Waterford make him the League of Ireland Premier Division’s current joint-second top goalscorer.
The former Cork City youth player, who is yet to make a first-team appearance for the Blues but has been on the bench on five occasions, is contracted to Town until the summer of 2021.
