Woolfenden: We Gave Fortuna a Helping Hand - Ipswich Town News

Defender Luke Woolfenden felt the Blues gave Fortuna Düsseldorf a helping hand in their 4-1 defeat in the opening 45-minute match at the Interwetten Cup.

"It was a difficult game, they were a very a good team and we got off to a bad start conceding three goals in the first 15 minutes,” Woolfenden said. "But it was a good workout, we got 45 minutes under our belts.

"They kept the ball well, took their chances well, and to be fair their goals came from our mistakes and they punished us as well.”

Was manager Paul Lambert disappointed with the manner in which the goals were conceded.

"Literally every goal [came from our mistakes]. Obviously every goal you can stop but we gave them a helping hand with a lot of them. Literally that really, we could have stopped the goals.”

Fortuna were the second Bundesliga side Town have faced in just over a week with Paderborn defeating them 3-2 last Saturday.

"I wouldn’t say there’s a big difference but there is a difference,” Woolfenden reflected on facing top flight German opposition.

"Obviously they keep the ball very well, they don’t panic under pressure and even today their goalkeeper was spraying passes for fun, I’d say that’s the main difference.”
