Former Bury Defender Thompson Linked - Ipswich Town News

Town are reported to be eyeing former Bury central defender Adam Thompson.

According to the EADT, the Blues are keen on Thompson, who is understood to have been interesting a number of League One and League Two clubs having terminated his contract at Gigg Lane in the wake of the Shakers’ ongoing financial problems.

Twice-capped Northern Ireland international Thompson impressed as Bury won promotion to League One last season and wore the captain’s armband on occasion.

The 26-year-old from Harlow began his career with Watford during which time he had spells on loan with Brentford, Wycombe, Barnet and Southend before making his switch to the Shrimpers permanent in 2014.

After joining Bury three years later Thompson, who also operates at right-back, had a short stint on loan with Bradford City.

Town appear likely to be in the market for another senior central defender with skipper Luke Chambers and Toto Nsiala the only experienced centre-halves at the club ahead of youngsters Luke Woolfenden and Corrie Ndaba, although Cole Skuse impressed at the heart of the defence against Sheffield United towards the end of last season.

Chambers will miss the opening game against Burton due to suspension, while Nsiala suffered a hamstring injury at the Interwetten Cup, which appears likely to see him miss the start of the season.
