Lambert: Flynn Can't React Like That and He Knows It - Ipswich Town News
Blues boss Paul Lambert says he’ll speak to midfielder Flynn Downes today about the red card he was shown for a headbutt in last week’s friendly at Cambridge United.
As expected, the 20-year-old has received no further sanction for the dismissal with the FA not having launched an investigation into the incident.
Asked if he’d spoken to the Brentwood-born midfielder, who had been Town’s most impressive player in the goalless draw against the U’s until he reacted to a bad challenge, Lambert says he hasn’t so far but plans to.
"No, I haven't, I'll speak to him today,” he said. "He's a really good player, and everybody knows he's got that and tackles are a part of the game.
"But again, he's a young player learning the game and tackles like that will happen to him more times than not throughout his career, but he can't react the way he did, and he knows that.
"But again, it's learning and it's part of a young player’s learning curve and he's got to handle that and not get involved with things like that.”
Lambert says it could be a big season for Downes and the other young players coming through at Town but also for everyone at Portman Road.
"It's big for everybody, not just the young players,” he said. "It's big for everybody connected with the club, the supporters, the people working at the stadium, everybody.”
