U18s Third at Dutch Tournament - Ipswich Town News

Town’s U18s finished third at the SportChain Cup in Dordrecht over the weekend.

The young Blues beat Belgian side KV Mechelen 3-0 in their opening game of the U19 competition on Saturday with Zak Brown (pictured), Tyreece Simpson and Ola Bello on target.

They followed-up that result with a 4-0 hammering of the Champs Academy in which Lewis Reed scored twice and Bello and Michael Bareck once each, then drew 0-0 with Danish club Helsingør.

On Sunday, they were defeated 3-2 by Rotterdam side Excelsior with Colin Oppong and Reed the Blues’ scorers.

In the third/fourth play-off the youngsters recorded a rare Town penalties win when they defeated Nottingham Forest 4-2 from the spot after a 0-0 draw.

Danish club Esbjerg fB, where ex-Town left-back Jonas Knudsen started his career, won the competition with fellow Danes Helsingør second.

The Town U18s, along with young players from seven other EFL clubs, were on a pre-season trip which ended on Sunday. They previously played friendlies against Bayer Leverkusen’s U19s, which they lost 5-1, and Sparta Rotterdam, which ended in a 5-3 loss.

Subsidised by the Erasmus+ fund, the visit was aimed at promoting development and exchanging skills and ideas between players and coaches.

Around 150 players from the Blues, Barnsley, Burton Albion, Cheltenham Town, Lincoln City, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday and Walsall were on the trip which was hosted by a number of Dutch clubs. Town were with NAC Breda.

In addition to training sessions led by European coaches and the games, the players also had language lessons, visited the Overloon War Museum, watched an Eredivisie match, played footgolf and were given a tour of the Johan Cruyff ArenA.

The U18s, who are coached by Adem Atay, start their Professional Development Two South season with a home game against Sheffield Wednesday at Playford Road on Saturday morning (KO 11am).
