Town striker James Norwood has put his penalty miss at Peterborough earlier this month behind him and vowed to carry on from the spot.
The ex-Tranmere man, who is just five league games into his Town career, already has four goals to his credit and showed the miss had not affected him when he coolly converted a penalty in last week’s convincing 5-0 win at struggling Bolton.
Eagle-eyed fans probably spotted the striker deep in conversation with Alan Judge for a few seconds after the spot-kick was awarded at Bolton, but Norwood said: "I was on the sheet to take the penalty and I said after the Peterborough game that the next time I took one it was going in,” he revealed.
"I made sure I grabbed the ball and I said to Judgey ‘Listen, I need this. I need to put things right’. Thankfully it hit the back of the net.
"It’s not that easy to forget a miss because it’s a free shot at goal from 12 yards. But the keepers are paid to stop it and they do their research.
"It’s a little bit cat and mouse with the keeper thinking ‘Are you going the same way or are you changing?’ But, you know, if you hit the penalty well enough then it’s going to go in.
"At Peterborough I didn’t hit it cleanly enough because I was in my own head a little bit. I changed my mind midway through the run-up and I’d already made my decision three days before Bolton where my next penalty was going.
"People will always miss penalties but I think it’s important as the penalty-taker that if you do miss one you score the next. I was getting texts off the lads saying ‘Pogba’s missed a penalty and he’s on 300 grand a week’ so that made me feel a little bit better.
"But it’s not nice to miss and in the position we were in at the time it felt worse. If you’re two or three up and you miss it doesn’t matter too much but luckily Chambo bailed us out in the 94th minute, otherwise I’d have gone home and probably not spoken to anyone.”
After successive wins over AFC Wimbledon and Bolton in the space of four days Town banked six points to go to the top of League One on goal difference. The confidence and self-belief in the squad has also soared.
Norwood added: "You can see the way we have grown over the last five games. We’ve got better each week but we’re still not hitting the heights we want to hit.
"We’re there or thereabouts and the first six, seven or eight games of a season are always a bit frantic. Teams are beating other teams they shouldn’t be beating and when the league opens out a bit, and teams are finding their true positions, you find out the games that you need to be winning.”
Asked how he felt League One compared to League Two, where his 32 goals in all competitions helped Tranmere to promotion via the play-offs, Norwood said: "They’re pretty similar, I think. I’m in the same sort of situation I was in last season, playing in a very good side that is pushing for promotion.
"Things are easier for you when you’re in one of the better sides in the division and you have a strike partner in Kayden [Jackson], who runs, creates and scores. You have to do things a little bit differently but it’s just a question of adapting and if you back yourself as a player you’re going to be more than able to play.”
Meanwhile, Norwood revealed he has joined the many thousands of people worldwide to become a victim of an Internet scam. He said: "My bank rang me in the morning and I’ve done some research and found the culprit. He’s in the Philippines and I’ve got his exact house over there so we’ll see what happens.
"The police are not involved — I don’t think there’s a lot they could do — and I’ve got my money back. My card was stopped and I’ve got a new one, so it’s not a problem. But he’s still trying to sign into my Netflix — that’s the bit that is annoying me.
"I’m getting an email every two days saying he is trying to change my password. I’ve changed it now to a certain couple of words that is actually a not very polite message to him so he might just leave me alone.”
