Lambert Dismisses New Contract Talks Claim But Has Spoken to O'Neill About Wilson - Ipswich Town News

Town boss Paul Lambert has dismissed a claim that talks have started regarding extending his Blues contract, but revealed that he has spoken to general manager of football operations Lee O’Neill about James Wilson’s situation.

A report last week said the club and Lambert had opened discussions regarding new terms, however, the Blues boss, who is currently contracted until the summer of 2021, said that's news to him.

"No, I've not heard anything like that,” he said. "I don't get involved in those things, it doesn't affect me, and it doesn't really bother me, to be honest.”

Wilson, 30, is out of contract on New Year’s Day with Sunderland and Peterborough said to be eyeing the former Lincoln central defender ahead of potential January moves.

The Wales international has said he’d like to stay at Town and Lambert says he and O’Neill have talked about him.

"Lee and I spoke about him the other week, and I'm pretty sure Lee will speak to James,” he said. "I think he's done ever so well for us.”

Wilson will miss Sunday’s game at Accrington as he is banned for his red card at Fleetwood, an absence which could see Toto Nsiala come into the back three for the first time this season.

"James has been excellent,” Lambert added. "And Toto I thought was excellent, to be fair, to him against Gillingham, I thought he was very, very good.

"But that's the beauty of having a squad, rather than looking over your shoulder thinking ‘What are we going to do next?’.”
