Histon Youngster Spends Time Training With Town - Ipswich Town News

Histon boss Lance Key has revealed that his side’s 16-year-old central defender Alfie Lawrence spent time training with the Blues earlier in the week.

Lawrence has broken into the BetVictor Isthmian North Division club’s first team picture this season and caught his manager’s eye in Wednesday’s 4-0 Velocity Trophy victory at Hertford Town.

"Alfie was superb,” Key told Cambridgeshire Live. "He’d just come back from training for two days with Ipswich Town, went straight into our side and despite being tired didn’t put a foot wrong.

"Ipswich said they liked what they saw and would get back to him, but you just don’t know what will happen.

"But if he continues to play the way he has been, it won’t only be Ipswich looking at him.

"He’s only 16 years old and I’m pencilling him into our first team squad. In fact, the youngsters who we’ve been playing in the Trophy have all given me selection headaches.

"We wondered at the start of the season if a league cup with group stages would be a pain with too many games, but it’s allowed us to blood eight youngsters and give our U18s a taste of first-team action.”

Lawrence was with the youth set-up at Cambridge City as a schoolboy and spent time with Haverhill Borough last season.
