Town boss Paul Lambert says referees’ chief Mike Jones agreed that the Blues’ goal against Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday shouldn’t have been ruled out and that the Chairboys’ penalty was outside the area.
After Tuesday's match, which ended 0-0, Lambert said he planned to call Jones, the national group director of the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) regarding referee Alan Young’s disastrous display.
Cambridgeshire-based official Young ruled out what should have been a Curtis Thompson own goal -after consulting with his assistant Aaron Farmer once the players were already lined-up for the restart - gave the visitors their spotkick - which was ultimately saved by Tomas Holy - when the challenge had been outside the box, having turned down an earlier Town penalty claim when Jon Nolan’s shot struck Joe Jacobson on the hand and booked 11 players.
Asked whether he’d had a word with striker James Norwood regarding his yellow card for dissent following the goal being disallowed - his fifth caution of the season meaning the striker will miss the League One game at Coventry a week on Saturday - as it was needless, Lambert responded: "So was the decision!
"Listen, I’ve spoken to Mike Jones and he can’t believe it as well how the goal was chalked off, it should never have been chalked off. It was never a penalty because it was outside the box.
"With James, it happens with the emotion of the game, you get caught in the emotion of the game.”
