ITFC Women Thrash Cambridge United - Ipswich Town News

ITFC Women extended their FAWNL Division One South East winning run to eight games after defeating Cambridge United 5-0 at the Goldstar Stadium, Felixstowe on Sunday afternoon.

The top-of-the-table Tractor Girls, who have won every league game this season aside from their 1-1 draw with AFC Wimbledon on the opening day, went in front on the quarter hour when Natasha Thomas headed home Sophie Peskett’s ball into the six-yard box.

Seven minutes before the break Anna Grey made it 2-0 having been teed-up by Thomas, then just before the break the visitors were awarded a penalty.

However, Town keeper Lucy Williamson, who was making her debut with her signing from Brighton & Hove Albion having been announced just prior to kick-off, saved the spotkick to maintain the Blues’ 2-0 lead as the teams went in at the break.

Seven minutes after the restart skipper Amanda Crump added the third, Peskett again the provider of the cross.

Three minutes later, Thomas stabbed home her second of the game to make it 4-0 with Peskett once again the supplier.

And on 59 Peskett got on the scoresheet herself, hitting home from Thomas’s knockdown to complete another comprehensive victory.

"We dominated from start to finish,” manager Joe Sheehan said. "I had an idea how Cambridge would set up and they pretty much did what was expected.

"They tried to frustrate with all 11 players behind the ball. It’s something we’ve encountered before. We’re learning how to play against teams who want to have a real go at us, teams that want to really drop off. Delighted to score five and pick up three points.”

Elsewhere, second-placed Billericay weren’t in FAWNL Division One South East action as their scheduled opponents Leyton Orient were playing in a rearranged FA Cup second round tie at Portsmouth with the winners set to face Town in the next round.

And it will be Pompey, who play in the FAWNL Southern Premier Division, a level above the Blues, who will be at the Goldstar Ground for the third round tie on Sunday 5th January (KO 1pm) after defeating the Londoners 6-1.
