Burton Scores For Boston - Ipswich Town News

On loan striker Steve Burton scored his first ever senior goal last night as Boston beat Bristol Rovers 2-0 at the Memorial Ground in the Worthington Cup.

In only his second senior appearance Burton hit a powerful volley past the keeper on 52 with Simon Weatherstone later adding to their lead.

Burton made his league debut at the weekend after registration problems had caused him to miss the two previous league matches. The problems were caused by his lack of professional status, however, Boston sources report that Town solved the hitch by offering him a professional deal.

While failing to score on his debut, a 1-1 draw with Wrexham, he impressed fans and came close to snatching a winner.

Also in the Boston line-up for last night's Worthington Cup preliminary round game (a match caused by Town's European qualification) was former Town star and Boston caretaker-manager Neil Thompson.

Previously a reluctant Thompson said he would "play if absolutely necessary because rigor mortis is setting in", however, according to reports the 38-year-old had a good game, although he picked up a yellow card.
