The series of events over the weekend has left Rotherham United boss Ronnie Moore more than a little confused. After a hoax caller contacted the Millers on Friday, Moore spoke out saying that he could take the club no further and would relish the chance to take charge of Town.
His comments are bound to frustrate the United fans who now believe their manager has no wish to stay at the club and also stated that he had an escape clause in his contract should an offer come in, all because of a hoax caller.
"I don't know what the hell's going on," Moore said. "I don't know what I'm doing. Friday's phone call was taken by our chief executive. A phone number was left — and as far as we were aware, it was the Ipswich chairman.
"Now [David] Sheepshanks is saying it wasn't him — and if it's a hoax, I just won't be able to believe it. I tried to speak to my chairman after the game but he'd already gone. I'll talk to him tomorrow morning to sort this out, although I'm not sure he knows exactly what's happening."
While Sheepshanks denied he had made the call, he said, "We'd be fools not to think about him.
"We're looking for a high calibre of candidate — someone with vision, passion and good communication skills, who can inspire and unite a team."
Bruce Rioch has said he'd like to be George Burley's successor when he spoke to the BBC at the weekend. "Obviously I would have an interest in the position at Ipswich Town."
The ex-Canaries boss, who still lives in East Anglia, was not concerned over the rivalry between Town and Norwich. "I don't think that's so much of an issue now, and in football all that matters is getting results for the club. That's what the supporters and the directors want, and I have managed to get results wherever I have been."
One man definitely staking a claim to the hot seat, is the man currently in temporary charge. Tony Mowbray thanked the fans for his reception when he made his way to the dugout saying to the club site: "It was a great reception from the supporters and I really appreciated it."
He did notice a reaction when he took off Pablo Counago, however Mowbray explained that it wasn't just tactical.
"Pablo picked up a slight injury but his body language was telling me he needed to come off anyway," he added. "We need the lad for next week at Reading and that was his fourth game in 10 days and he was tired. You have to protect players sometimes."
