Kieran McKenna's side left the Portman Road pitch frustrated after yesterday's 1-1 draw with Cheltenham despite dominating throughout, but Leif Davis says that in the same circumstances the Blues wouldn't do anything different.
Twenty-nine shots and 74 per cent possession tell the tale of Town's display against the Robins.
Everything looked on track for a win after an early eighth-minute goal from Luke Woolfenden, but Ryan Broom levelled in the 34th minute with Cheltenham's only shot on target. From there, the Blues were unable to find a way through the massed ranks of the Robins’ defence.
With Plymouth drawing 1-1 away to Lincoln, it was an opportunity to close the gap on the league leaders missed.
Town appeared to do everything they could to grab a victory and Davis says all that was missing from the performance was goals, but he believes they will come if the same approach is taken in future matches.
"I think we've done everything we can today to try and score again,” he explained. "The chances created were massive, it's just the way they defended was really good, throwing their bodies on the line.
"I think we started very, very good today. They didn't really do anything in the first 20 or 30 minutes, we were just suffocating them in the backline and every time they tried to play it long to get them back up the pitch, but it would just come straight back.
"It's just one of them where we've just got to be creating the chances and moving the ball around. It'll definitely come for us.
"I think we just need to keep working in training to try and score more goals, but it will come. I think we'll absolutely batter a team soon with the way we play.
"[It’s] very frustrating, so frustrating. We had 28 attempts on goal, we've got to put more to bed. They've had three and scored one, and it's just one of those days where we couldn't score.
"We scored one and we scored a good goal, but we've got to take more chances in front of goal.
"We started well and then just a little defensive mistake cost the goal. We've got to be switched on and not let that happen.
"But we started very well and the manager said that's probably the best he's seen the boys play since he's been here, and we felt good on the pitch, with the ball, without the ball and getting the ball back.
"Then just keeping them in their half. I don't think they got out of their half really in the second half. We've got to keep going, working on the training ground to keep pushing on to get better.”
When asked if he would have done anything differently if the game were to be played again, Davis continued: "To be fair, I don't think we'd do anything different. Like the manager said, it's probably the best we've played since he's been here. It's just one of those days in football where the chances that we created didn't go in.
"From my view, one of them should have been a penalty with the handball, but it's the ref's decision at the end of the day and we can't do anything about it.
"I was just trying to put as many balls into the box as I could because Freddie [Ladapo] is a big lad. Then when Cam [Burgess] came on as well, he loves heading the ball, so I was trying to put them in there for those two.
"But their defence was strong today. They were getting in front of everything and with shots, they were blocking everything. The keeper did well and saved some good chances from us. But, like I say, we've got to put more away with 28 shots.”
The 22-year-old says he and his teammates will analyse the game, looking at both the positives and negatives from the performance.
"Personally I’ll go away maybe tomorrow and watch the game back,” he said. "I’ll look at things that I need to improve on and things that I’m doing well and definitely things I need to work on.
"We’ll do that in video during the week and we’ve got to get those things put right.”
Injuries have begun to hamper Town in recent times with Dominic Ball and Tyreece John-Jules joining the list of those unavailable. Earlier in the season, manager Kieran McKenna was able to make five often game-changing substitutions, but Davis insists that whilst losing John-Jules and Ball is a blow, the players available are more than capable of making an impact.
"Obviously, I'm gutted for those two [John-Jules and Ball]. They are both a massive part of the team. Dom plays his part and he's just been unfortunate with a few injuries this year, and both of them are massive players for us when they come off the bench or when they start games.
"Tyreece as well is an unbelievable player. I think we probably missed him today in that final third because, no doubt, he'd probably have come on and grabbed a goal. But hopefully they'll both come back stronger and I'm absolutely gutted for them."
Continuing on the options from the bench against earlier in the season, Davis continued: "It does [make a difference], but the players that have come on do their job as well.
"Everyone is a very good player in the team, even on the bench, we're all as strong as each other and that's why they are at the club.
"Everyone gives it all their all when they come on the pitch. Kyle [Edwards] played really well when he came on today as well and it's going to be good to have people back like Greg [Leigh] and maybe others coming back soon. It'll be good to have them back and around the team.”
