Finidi Given Free - Ipswich Town News

Town have made former Nigeria international Finidi George available on a free transfer. The ex-Ajax player is the highest profile of a number of players given frees of late.

Finidi joined Town in the summer of 2001 for £3.1 million and is thought to be one of the club's highest paid players despite not being a regular in the first team.

Town chairman David Sheepshanks told the official site that there has been interest from a number of clubs: "Finidi is available on a free transfer and negotiations are under way with a number of interested parties."

A deal is expected to be confirmed during the January transfer window.

The Nigerian had a dramatic start to his Town career with a stunning performance against Derby in his home debut when he scored two goals. However, that display has rarely been repeated as he found it very difficult to adjust to the English game.

In October of last year he broke his cheekbone at Fulham and on his return had a decent spell of form before joining Nigeria for the African Nations' Cup in Mali in January. After his return he rarely impressed and this season has been more of the same.

It is likely that clubs in Spain may be the interested parties as he is well known there from his time with Real Betis and Real Mallorca from where he moved to Town.

Recently Town also made Wayne Brown, Richard Logan and Erdem Artun available on free transfers.
