Medals2Matches at Leicester Game - Ipswich Town News

Saturday’s home game against Leicester City is Town’s dedicated 2024/25 Remembrance matchday with the club again running its Medals2Matches scheme.

The Blues are again partnering with Combat2Coffee, the mental health charity which supports veterans and their families, a relationship which instigated Medals2Matches, which is now in its third season.

The initiative encourages serving military personnel and veterans to wear their medals to the game, while the club has donated a number of tickets to veterans so they have the opportunity to take part in the remembrance tributes. Those wearing their medals will also be entitled to a 10 per cent discount on all food and beverages across the stadium.

Combat2Coffee’s founder, Nigel Seaman, who first launched the event in 2022, said: "It is great to bring back Medals2Matches for the third year running.

"Medals2Matches isn’t just about giving veterans a great day out – it’s about encouraging conversation and shining a light on the heroes in the stands.

"Every year we hear stories about how the event has helped people speak out about their wellbeing – and that’s what it’s all about.”

The veterans are set to meet at Bar Twenty One in the town centre before the match, where 86-year-old veteran Phil Hubert will perform The Last Post before a military piper leads an escort to Portman Road.

Former Ipswich players and Combat2Coffee supporters Terry Butcher and Russell Osman will also be hosting a mental health talk in the FanZone pre-match.

Mark Ashton, Town chairman and CEO, added: "Remembrance is one of the most significant days in the club’s calendar.

"With Suffolk's strong military heritage and the presence of several key military facilities, it’s essential for the club to create a tribute and a matchday that honours and raises awareness for this important occasion.”

Personnel from the 7th Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, which is based in Colchester, will be exhibiting in the FanZone prior to the match and will be available to speak to supporters regarding their service.

In addition, 28 Engineer Regiment, who are based out of Honnington, will be part of the on-pitch tribute with The Last Post played and a period of silence ahead of kick-off.

Current Town staff members who have served in the military will also be a part of the on-pitch tributes.

Supporters attending Saturday’s game against Leicester City are asked to be in their seats earlier than usual to allow a respectful period to commemorate those who have served their country ahead of kick-off.
