Blues boss Kieran McKenna has paid tribute to club legend Trevor Whymark, who died yesterday, aged 74.
Whymark was with Town from 1967 until 1979, scoring 104 goals in 322 starts and 13 sub appearances, famously netting four times in the 4-0 UEFA Cup thrashing of Lazio at Portman Road in 1973. He also scored four times against West Brom in the 7-0 victory and, again in the UEFA Cup, against Swedish side Landskrona. He is the club’s all-time sixth top goalscorer.
"He's a name I've heard plenty about, not just in the last couple of days but over the last few years as well,” McKenna said. "And a big part of a record-breaking team for the football club.
"Even when we were in League One, there was a reason why we were getting 30,000 crowds and it wasn't because of me, it wasn't because of the new ownership, but it is because of a massive fanbase and love for the football club.
"And a lot of that fanbase and a lot of that love for the football club can be dated back to those successful teams that Ipswich had under the two Sirs.
"And I think all of us have got a lot to be thankful for to those teams, those players and those managers for laying down the foundations for the football club. And I'm sure it'll be very well attributed this weekend to a legend of the club.”
